Pali Puka a peak on the Pali Lookout in Oahu

Pali Puka

Original Acrylic of a plein air painting by Rebecca Snow of Honolulu

If you hike along the Koolau range you will see this sharp peak. I
got to paint beside some of my favorite artists on the island this day.
Mark N. Brown was the instructor for his once a week early morning
Plein air class. It was a typical beautiful day and there were hikers ascending
the jagged edge do the Pali Puka cliff.

Come to Oahu and learn to paint. I promise you will love it.

Sandy Beach Shade -original painting by Rebecca Snow of Honolulu

Original painting by Rebecca Snow
"Sandy Beach Shade"
Oahu Hawaii
16 x 20
(painted plein air during Mark Brown's class on Saturday early morning July 27th 2013)

Monica posed for the class as we tried to cover up in the hot sun.
It was a beautiful day and the ocean was spectacular.
I learned a little and painted fast to capture the perfect moment.
I have several corrections to make but hope this post inspires you to paint
or at least sit in the little bit of shade at Sandy's Beach and watch the waves swoosh around the rocks.

PAINTING A PEACOCK and THE MISSING MOON

PAINTING A PEACOCK

I am teaching Lia to paint and she came up with the idea of a 4 panel peacock.
I was not sure it could work, but WOW was I wrong. I am so excited about this
project and it looks great at each stage of the painting.

Lia is painting most of this with my instruction but I sent her home with the painting and "HOMEWORK". She is going to be painting the stems and greenery.

So , I was so smart and MS. KNOW IT ALL and we were plugg'in along painting when Lia realized we were missing the middle panel with the moon on it.

the missing moon appears

Okay, so that was a pretty obvious item that the teacher (me) should have picked up on.
There was a lot of giggling going on and the final painting will be wonderful but the "getting there" has been so much fun. I love the creative process. What a great way to spend a Friday morning.

Oh and Lia has named this Peacock LILA.
stay tuned for the next PEACOCK UPDATE

PADDLE AT DIAMOND HEAD

PADDLE

There is joy in teamwork
so they say
but I like things done
just my way
if I were a padd'ler
I'd row real slow
or paint all  the sites
and have no where to go.

NORTH SHORE SURF COMPETITION

NORTH SHORE SURF CHAMPIONSHIP

(that's me with the backpack of watercolor supplies)
watercolor painting and poignant poem by Rebecca Snow of Honolulu

NORTH SHORE COMPETITION
There is always a crowd
where the surf is being rode
I can't always get there
cause the highway gets all slowed
by all the lucky tourists
they are eager for a glance
at the  men in fancy wetsuits
who on the waves do dance
but I got up early Sunday
started off at early church
just to get a parking space
and find a beach front perch
and so I was quite early
there were camera men in place
and all the wanna-be'ers had jealous on their face
the surfers they were bobbing and floating
so serene
not a wave in sight , the surf was glassy clean
and slowly as the morning broke
the waves arrived on time
to start the competition
and the scene , it all was mine.
the sun peeked like the shyest child and
there was a distant storm,
then gray , then blue, then silver pink
then chilly , hot, then warm.
the changes of the surfer sky came at us rolling fast
the perfection of this ocean time we wished would ever last
then one paddled and he missed it,
one paddled and he stood
one paddled and another
and everything was good.
and I was taken by the "still" that fell upon the crowd
the same as in our early church
and many of us bowed
we bowed our knees on beach towels
we raised our voice as one
we marveled at the beauty
facing star struck at the sun
it wasn't meant as worship
we'd not arrived to praise
but it just so happened
that all together we felt saved
We knew that God was present
We knew we were all blessed
the surfers got their trophies and I'm sure they did their best
but the winner was THE OCEAN
the runner up THE SKY
the competition stunned us
as the whales breached passing by.
so I just want to mention
that if you are da kine
come on to the North Shore
and worship any time.

ART DEMO AND LUNCH -- Cactus Bistro in Kailua

An intimate lunch setting with Rebecca Snow and the wonderful team at Cactus Bistro in Kailua.
Rebecca Snow at Cactus Bistro in Kailua , Hawaii

I fell in love with watching artists paint when I visited Georgetown in Washington DC at 9 years old.
My great cousin Beatrice Bulla lived there, near M and Wisconsin, and I was in awe of the painters at their french easels capturing the scenes of the day.
We walked the cobblestone streets lined with artist.  Each artist had a different version of what we all were seeing.
So art, like intense banter, was showing us the wide perspective of each persons views. It is in that joy of difference that I find my most intense excitement in painting plein air. It is in the unique interpretation of a scene or the surprise rendering of an object that I realize worship and thankfulness for a world that never ceases to amaze.

March 13th Cactus Bistro held the LUNCH and ART DEMO "CREATIVE CACTUS"
Call Cactus if you are interested in booking a group for this joyful lunch experience.

Hawaii Surf Paintings

surfing area for locals at Kewalo Basin and Kakaako Park in Honolulu Hawaii
"little autograph tree"
acrylic original by Rebecca Snow

This little tree is at Kewalo basin
just begging to be hugged.
It was painted a few years back when I first got to Honolulu to live.
I remember seeing the Autograph Tree pods for the first time.
It is an amazingly odd little tree with a jelly-like center in the pod.
It is smart to never park your car under one. The jelly does not
want to come off easily.
When you sign your name on a leaf it stay there and thus the name
"autograph tree"

I just thought I'd repost it for old time sake and to remind myself of
the joy of seeing things for the very first time!!!

"Surfing North Shore"
 Original Painting by Rebecca Snow
When I first arrived I would stay up until 3 am trying to paint surfers.
Not much as changed. I still love trying to capture that movement
and , WOW, do we have great opportunities to see fabulous surfers here in Oahu.
